Duck Beach Days 4-6: Weekdays

Posted on 16:37 by rendy orton
"A fair is a veritable smorgasbord orgasbord orgasbord,
After the crowds have ceased."
-Templeton (from Charlotte's Web)

Duck Beach is a very different place after the weekend. The crowds thin out as people have to get back to work. Houses are consolidated (along with their food supplies). Parties are smaller. New friends are made and deeper conversations had, as there aren't so many people around.
While we still played some volleyball and bocce and played in the ocean a little, our activities shifted a little from the weekend. We did more of these...chilling by the pool and ingesting carbonated beverages,
celebrating birthdays (above: Charity and R. Scott),
and even played some Family Feud (girls vs. guys, of course). Side note: I think we can all agree that Brent was the best non-professional host that we've ever seen. If John O'Hurley decides to leave the show, then Brent could be an immediate fill-in.

Leaving Duck Beach was a bittersweet occasion. It's a fun place and you meet so many great people and make great memories, but eventually you just want to get really, truly clean and sleep in your own comfy bed. Thanks for an excellent Memorial Day beach vacation, everybody!

Duck Beach Day 3: A Little Bit Crispy

Posted on 18:10 by rendy orton
I wish I could spend every Monday on a sunny beach in North Carolina. It's the perfect way to start the week.

I messaged Shonni about going for a run but received no response. So I sent one more saying that I'd keep an eye out for her on the beach later, and I went for my run. Blazing hot on the roads, but much easier on legs than beach running, so I picked my poison and enjoyed it :) Back at the beachhouse, checked my phone and Shonni had replied. She apparently barely missed my text since she was walking Baxter (her Chihuahua). Good to know that I wasn't stood up haha. So we agreed to meet up and play a little on the beach later.Once again, games ruled the beach. Bocce, volleyball, skimboarding, soccer, football, whiffleball, etc, dominated. And some of my friends decided that it was an opportunity to demonstrate their dancing, jumping, and dancing/jumping skills. For example:
Some of our friends decided to bury Dustin in the sand. Here is a picture before they shaped him into a mermaid. Or was it merman? Merman! MERMAN!Plus additional reunions with friends from the past, such as this trio from Condo Row at BYU.Now I'm not an accomplished, graceful or, umm, talented dancer. I took the introductory social dance class in college and I paid attention. Obscene amounts of practice with patient dance partners helped me feel good about my abilities by the end of the semester and pass the class, to boot. But every so often, I get the urge to try something new and stretch those dance skills, and Ade helped me by allowing me to practice a little ballet (beach-style). Maybe I'll have to look into some grown-up ballet classes. I wonder how much a cod-piece costs... hahahaAfter a full day on the beach with a little too much sun, we gathered at our beachhouse and had all the New York houses come over for a farewell BBQ. Seeing how many people I'd met in the last couple days was an interesting revelation and made me feel good about reaching out and meeting new people. Pretty much I feel like I'll never have to pay for hotel stay in New York. The post-party evening included more socializing, some swimming and hot-tubbing (I'd be happy to join you for a little whirl-pool technique anytime), and a couple batches of pizookie. Good times for all.

Duck Beach Day 2: Bocce on the Beach

Posted on 00:11 by rendy orton
Everyone was slow to rise in the morning due to late-night revelry [this is a recurring theme of Duck Beach], but most went to the local LDS branch (instantly transforming it into a stake conference in terms of size). After the crew returned to our New York house, we had a delicious brunch/lunch of pancakes, eggs, sausage, and fresh fruit. Note: unsurprisingly, the Nutella didn't last long...After everyone had eaten their fill, the games began. Cards, Settlers of Cataan, and Boggle were crowd favorites, and of course general discussions abounded in and out of the games.I, on the other hand, had a date with destiny. Matt Fischer (our Bocce guru) arranged for some bocce friends to join up at the beach for some Sunday afternoon matches. Last year at the Labor Day version of Duck Beach, Camille and I showed that we are a force to be reckoned with, and we intended to carry on that dominant tradition. Let's just say we didn't disappoint. Soon the rallying cry of all the opposing teams was:But you can't stop red. Not when these two bocce warriors are carrying the colors of blood and rampage and passion for the game of bocce. We even had one match where we had the winning throws in four consecutive rounds, which means we had 12 points and the nearest possible score was 4. To the undisputed champions, Camille and Aaron!!Dominating opponents is tough work, and we all left the beach pretty hungry and ready for relaxation. I headed back to the beach house and grabbed some dinner, and then our whole house went to work preparing for the Guitar Acoustic Night which we were hosting in a few short hours. We hid our drink supplies and tied the cupboards shut (unfortunate, albeit necessary, tasks learned from the other New York house's vanishing-food-supplies experience during the previous night's party), moved all the furniture around to make room for the coming hordes of people, and set up the sound system for the guitar enthusiasts to show their skills. Below are a few of the talented artists who performed, including:Jane Gardiner and Autumn JonesDustin "Smooth as" CurrieSara Borg (co-emcee) with Lisa Fraser (performer)Lindsay Ashby and

Just before the acoustic show started, I met this cute girl named Shonni and we had a good conversation, which we resumed after the show and subsequent dance party. She asked if I'd like to go running together, and I got her digits so I could contact her in the morning. Little did I know at the time what would come of this meeting...

Duck Beach Day 1: And So It Begins

Posted on 22:42 by rendy orton
Dustin and I had a great drive down to North Carolina on Friday night, listening to some sweet tunes and a couple podcasts of "This American Life" as we traveled. Since our house wasn't available yet, we stayed the night in a hotel and had the continental breakfast in the morning, before heading to the beach to get Duck Beach started in earnest.
The main attraction on Saturday at Duck Beach is the volleyball tournament. While I didn't sign up to play, I got in on a few pick-up games and spent most of the day saying hi to and catching up with old friends. Single Mormons come from all over the country (and even foreign countries in some cases) to be at this gathering, so there are often unexpected reunions with people from your past, which can be really fun.
In addition to volleyball, bocce is a great beach activity. Using different features of the beach makes for variety in the bocce battle and allows each team to play to their strengths. My specialty is probably rolling along side-to-side inclines, and others are great at landing close in deep sand, or playing towards the waves (downhill inclines).
Since we didn't have a house or food to prepare lunches, Dustin and I were pretty hungry in the afternoon. Based on his positive prior-year experience, Dustin recommended the Bad Bean Taqueria (specifically the fish tacos), and Julie, Dustin, and I gave them a go, with happy results. In the evening, we cleaned up and relaxed at our beautiful beach home for a couple hours, and then stopped by another New York house that was having a huge party. Frankly, though, it was a little too much for me, and I wasn't feeling the club scene dancing, so I didn't stay too long. Back at our place, we socialized and did a little late-night swimming and hot-tubbing before hitting the sack. Phew, we'd had a jam-packed first day!

CPA Exam #4: The End?

Posted on 20:26 by rendy orton
Am I done? Did I pass the 4th CPA exam? I won't know for another month or so, but I'm crossing my fingers and I definitely felt better about it this time than last time. If I did pass, then I'll just have a couple smaller things to take care of (ethics exam, reporting of hours experience, etc) and I'll be a full-fledged CPA. Oh the joy in my sould and excitement of it all!

Spreadin' Patriotism from Woodstock to the Bronx

Posted on 21:14 by rendy orton
Ragnar Relays are, as advertised, an all-night party on wheels. And when you're able to do the race with a group of fun friends, you can bet it'll be unforgettable. The Woodstock-to-the Bronx Ragnar was excellent, and our team tore it up!The Patriotic Potomac Pacers made a name for themselves in this race. We were known for our team spirit/patriotism, awesome wrist bands and headbands, sweet tattoos, and epic teammate handoff routine.Though we ran hard, we also took time to have fun. Or maybe I should say that though we had fun, we also took time to run hard. haha Here's a little frolicking in the fields, indicative of the level of fun we brought to the table. This is where we slept during the night. Gotta love taking a nap (that's really all you can call those 3 hours) in the outfield at a city park. Better than sleeping in the car, right?
Running all night changes the game a little bit. Athletes make wrong turns, wearing a headlight and fluorescent vest has a different feel to it, and you never know what critters you might come upon when you're alone on the open road with a small headlight and the moon to light your way. I think all of our runners came away with a fun story or two.

The Patriotic Potomac Pacers had a great race, in terms of fun and athletic prowess. As a team, we crossed the finish line at Central Park in the Bronx with a finish time of 25:08:07 (yes, that's 25 hours of straight running). Plus, we took 16th place overall, out of 64 teams. And we came in 2nd in the open mixed division (26 teams).

I would proudly run this race, or any race, with the Patriotic Potomac Pacers again. USA! USA! USA!!!

We Loves Us Some Good Sportsmanship at Camden Yard

Posted on 12:25 by rendy orton
Birthdays = good
Baseball = better
A birthday baseball game in Baltimore = best
For Dan's birthday, a group of us went up to Camden Yard in Baltimore to see the Orioles take on the New York Yankees. Whether you love or hate the Yankees, or as some refer to them, the Evil Empire, you've got to admit they're fun to watch.
There was a little extra excitement in the air, as this was Alex Rodriguez' first game back from his steriod suspension. As we were just passing the stadium and heading to the parking garage, we heard a cheer. Upon parking and reaching the stadium in the 2nd inning, we found out that the cheer was ARoid hitting a 3-run homer in his first at-bat in the first inning. Stupid traffic made us miss it!The game was fairly tame, with hits and nice catches here and there, but mostly it was a pitcher's duel. Not awesome sword-fight dueling, mind you, as in this clip, but a duel of which pitcher could outthink the batters he faced and hit his spots, so like this but with pitches instead of poison. Note: I enjoy both types of duels almost equally.
As there were many people voicing their opinions and some using words that should not by typed or spoken, we decided to make a sign that would/should appeal to everyone (see above). In the end, it was pretty even (after the ARoid homer), so the Yankees won (which Dan was tickled pink about). After enjoying historic Camden Yard, we walked along the harbour and had a late dinner at ESPN Zone before heading back to DC. Such a fun night!

Welcome to the World, Summer & Zoe

Posted on 21:34 by rendy orton
Sunday afternoon, at about 5 pm MST, my sister-in-law Lindsey gave birth to the twin girls. Their names are Summer and Zoe (I'm curious if it might be Zoey, but have no indisputable proof either way, just an unfounded hunch), and they are a bit premature so they're pretty small. Guess they were just super-excited to get down here and say hi to us!

Adam called me in the evening to let me know, and I was happy to talk with him briefly about it all. I'm so very excited for all of them and that Gunner now has two little sisters to protect and love. My sister had more of the details, and you can read about them at her babies birth blogpost.

Can You Hear It? If Not, You're Old

Came across this very interesting story on Yahoo video today. Makes me glad that I've always been a proponent of earplugs at rock concerts, because I can still hear it. Can you? Check out the video here.

Saturday Morning at the Market

Posted on 09:15 by rendy orton
When friends come to town, there are many things to see and do in the greater Washington DC area. After the typical monuments and white houses and other such sight-seeing on Friday night, Eastern Market is an excellent place to visit on Saturday morning. Here are a couple pictures from when Liz and Carolyn came down from the Big Apple for the weekend and we all hit up the treasure that is Eastern Market.
So next time you come to DC, let me know, and we'll go get some tasty grub on Saturday morning and browse the stands for market goods and fresh fruits/veggies.
