It Ain't Easy Being Green on Halloween

Posted on 22:24 by rendy orton
On second thought, it actually is pretty easy being green on Halloween. Since I'd worn my costume this morning for the bike ride, most of it was dirty, and I didn't have time to wash it before going out. So I opted for being Kermit the Frog in a suit. Yes, he did wear a suit from time to time.I had a great evening socializing and celebrating the holiday with friends. We went to a party at Sam and Jess' apartment, and then later went dancing at Union Jack's in Ballston. I think our costumes were pretty good, don't you? We didn't get picked for the costume contest at Union Jack's, but we were all proud when the Abominable Snowman (from Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer) won. Congratulations, Bumble!

DBD 2009: Halloween Edition

Posted on 13:23 by rendy orton
Dutch Bike Dutch (DBD) has been going on for several years, and I'm glad to say I've been a participant on multiple occasions (here's one). Since this ride was held on Halloween, we brought our costumes along for added entertainment of the Amish who'd see us out on the roads. I was very excited that my brother Pete came over to Lancaster from Philly, as I'd thought the next time I'd see would be Thanksgiving. There were rides of 15, 20, 30, 50, and 60 miles, and we chose to go 30. As we rode along, we saw beautiful rolling hills, quaint Amish farms, several horse-and-buggies, a whole bunch of turkeys that will be on dinner tables on the fourth Thursday of November, cud-chewing cows, an Amish schoolhouse, and a couple graveyards. By the end of the ride, we were all pretty tuckered out, but it was a good tired. The kind that you're grateful for, ya know? Oh, and Pete and I had a bonus! We ended up getting the tongue-in-cheek first and second prizes for "sexiest costumes".To replenish/replace/over-replace the calories we'd burned, everybody went to a little restaurant called the Udder Choice that has decent food and above-average ice cream and sundaes. We ate and chatted probably longer than we should have, but I didn't mind. Our group was great and we had fun chatting it up.

What a great Halloween and a great way to celebrate prior to heading home to DC for more celebrating!

Pumpkin Guts and Ghosts

Posted on 21:19 by rendy orton
I haven't carved a pumpkin in a while, but after my friend Shandi and her roommates had done their pumpkins, they had a leftover, so she brought it over. We gutted it using my ice cream scoop, sorted the seeds out, and carved the face of our new friend Earl. Then we did a little experimenting with the camera and ended up capturing a photo of some ghosts that are haunting my apartment.

Lost in Yonkers... in DC

Posted on 21:44 by rendy orton
I am fascinated by other cultures and religions. I believe that every faith and society can teach us something and enrich our lives as we are open to their teachings and allow ourselves to be connected to other people by learning about them and from their experiences. So when my friend Kaysha (who writes the Weekend Picks highlights for dcist.com) put the word out that a group was going to see a pay-what-you-can production of "Lost in Yonkers" at the DC Jewish Community Center, I was stoked to join them. My friend Jess from work was also interested, so she came, too. We all met at the DCJCC a little before the performance, chatted for a bit, and then went in.I was impressed by the professionalism of the entire production. I didn't expected a community center performance to be of such high quality. But I guess there's a reason that the Jews dominate the entertainment industry :)The theater was nice, the sound system was flawless, the writing was great (by Neil Simon, who wrote "Barefoot in the Park" and "The Odd Couple"), and the actors and actresses were fantastic (delivering dramatic and humorous lines equally with ease). I'd recommend this show to anyone who can get a ticket--and they're already going fast!

The Stars at Night, Are Big and Bright...

Posted on 15:36 by rendy orton
For my big triathlons, I like to make it a completely different experience. I figure, if I'm going to do it, I might as well travel somewhere fun for the race, right? So for my second 1/2 Ironman (see my first here), I chose to race in a state that's famous for going big and being big. The great state of Texas.Thursday
The Longhorn 70.3 Austin 1/2 Ironman was on Sunday, so I flew into Austin on Thursday to have time to acclimate and see a little of the city. I didn't want to just fly in, race, and fly home. If I'm going to Texas, I want to see the place and have a well-rounded experience. After getting my rental car and heading to the hotel, I used the internet to find a small restaurant where I could get some brisket, which Texas is known to cook well.

Friday
Having seen some of Austin, I can say that I really like it. There is a lot going on, but it still maintains that small-town feel. First I went to the University of Texas at Austin to see the campus. I parked right by the football stadium, and it was an impressive sight. The rest of campus was also very nice, and students were helpful in giving me directions. The Texas State Capitol is an interesting yet beautiful building. Maybe my favorite feature is that it's made of "sunset red" granite, so it kind of has a pinkish hue. Not your typical government building, to be sure.I also wanted to see if all the hype about Texas high school football is legit, so I went to a nearby high school game that I found on the internet. Unfortunately, I picked a game between two private, Christian schools, so it was a small (though high scoring) affair. Maybe next time I come to Texas I'll see what I've been hearing about all these years.

Saturday
In order to race, you have to go to registration and attend a safety briefing. That was my main task on Saturday. Registration and sign-in were held at Luedecke Arena, which is where T2 (bike-to-run) and the finish line would be for the race, so it was good to be able to get my bearings and know how that portion would be.Sunday
Didn't get much sleep, but I was up super-early to drive down, park, and take the shuttle to Walter E. Long Park, which is where the swim in Decker Lake and T1 (swim-to-bike) were. The professionals started at 7:30, but my swim wave didn't start until 8:40. My swim went alright; nothing too eventful. Just settled in and churned through it.The bike course was challenging. Not because it was hilly or too hot or anything like that, but because the middle third of the course was pretty bumpy. That leaves the butt bones a bit raw. No bueno. However, I finished the bike on pace for my overall goal. The run was a different story. I was pacing myself alright early on, and lasted about 4 miles with a 10-min/mile (run 9, walk 1). Then the run course had its way with me. Both the fronts and backs of both legs cramped up with a vengeance. The next 9 miles were a battle of will.I jog-walked the whole way, making friends during the frequent walk breaks and taking in the scenery. Each time I'd jog again, I'd last maybe a 1/2 mile and then my legs would threaten to fully cramp and buckle under me, so I'd have to resume walking. I pushed the last mile in order to make my overall goal, and entered Luedecke Arena with just enough time to beat that goal by 10 seconds, for a total time of 6:29:48. And boy, was I happy to fire off my six-shooters in the air and be done!

Evil Dead: The Musical

Posted on 11:22 by rendy orton
Last night, I had the great pleasure of going to see something that I never would have expected to exist. People astound me with their creativity, and this was a happy surprise that took me back to my college days living in the dorms. You remember the "Evil Dead" movies starring a young Bruce Campbell, right?Well, someone decided that there wasn't quite enough singing and dancing in "Evil Dead", so they made a musical out of it.Pure

genius.

My friends Matt and Jen let me know that the show exists and that a small production was being done in Adams Morgan. Of course, I immediately went online and grabbed one of the few remaining tickets for an evening I didn't have plans. The show followed the storylines of "Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2" pretty accurately. Most of the copious quantities of fake blood spewed forth in the second act, and we fortunately had purchased garbage bags to cover our nice clothes (didn't have time to stop home and wear blood-able gear), but being in the splatter zone was still a lot of fun.If you have a chance and you enjoy campy, self-deprecating humor, plus lots and lots of fake blood, find the nearest production of "Evil Dead: The Musical" and go ready to get splattered on!

Punch Me in the Face

Posted on 19:02 by rendy orton
This post has been a long time coming, and I'm sure there will be things in the future that I'll add in subsequent posts, but here is my thus-far list.

Punch me in the face if I ever...

- say that I "could care less" about something. The correct term is "couldn't care less", indicating that an individual has absolutely no interest in the outcome of the topic. No matter what you say, these phrases don't mean the same thing.

- leash my child (exception: cute monkey or puppy backpacks are acceptable).- comment that someone is "workin' a half day, eh?" when they're leaving at or anytime after 5 PM. Just because a company expects its employees to forfeit their lives, doesn't give anyone the right to make lame comments.

City of Brotherly Love

Posted on 19:02 by rendy orton
One of the hardest parts about being in Washington DC is not seeing my family on a regular basis. I used to go to Sunday dinners almost every week when I lived in Utah. Now that's 2,000 miles away, which makes for a painful Sunday commute.

Fortunately, a little bit of my family moved out to Philadelphia a couple months ago for law school: my brother Pete.As one of my other brothers, Dave, flew out from Utah to visit us East-coasters, I journeyed up to Philly to spend the weekend with both of them.

After Dave's bags arrived from the airport (they got lost in transit), we drove into the city and checked out Pete's school. We saw the law library and some of campus, and it seemed like a really nice place. Pete then took us downtown and we saw the LOVE and game pieces sculptures, as well as some of the nicer areas. After going home to rest for a bit, we met up with some of Pete's law school friends and went out to dinner and then to the oldest continuously operating tavern in Philadelphia.Stash and Rach (two of Pete's 1L friends) made us a fantastic breakfast, complete with hash browns, eggs, toast, pancakes, and bacon. We brought some fresh fruit, and we all enjoyed the deliciousness of our feast. Then we went down to the Philadelphia Museum of Art to run the "Rocky steps" and see all the fine cultural exhibits inside the museum. The steps weren't as long as I'd expected, but I guess Rocky had run all through the city before reaching them.We saw some very good paintings and especially enjoyed the John Singer Sargent section, dadaist collection, and 1850-1900 European art (particularly Cezanne, Renoir, Manet, and van Gogh). The Marcel Duchamp exhibit, which detailed his creative process and construction of Etant donnes was interesting, though anticlimactic, or maybe I just didn't understand how deep and artsy it is and all its symbolism. A very real possibility, I admit.

Before I took off for DC, my brothers and I headed to Jim's for some authentic Philly cheese steaks. I had mine "wiz wit", meaning with Cheese whiz and onions. Yummy in the tummy and we all downed ours in about 15 mins because we were so hungry. It was hard to say goodbye to my bros, knowing that it could be a while before I see them again, but I'm grateful that I was able to spend even this much time with them in Philly. Until Thanksgiving, dudes!

Pseudo-Churchy Stuff

Posted on 13:29 by rendy orton
Here are a couple tidbits from the Washington DC (or potentially anywhere) Mormon single adult world.

Conference Crepe Party
For the past 17 LDS General Conferences, my friend Jay has held a crepe party in between the sessions on Sunday. I've been here for a couple of them, and they are wonderful. Jay provides the crepes, plates, and utensils. Everyone else brings the toppings. Fun ensues.

Fall FHE
Monday nights mean it's time for Family Home Evening (commonly referred to as FHE). Because of work, I don't get to go very often. Sometimes FHE can be really fun [by deduction, I'll let you figure out how FHE is the rest of the time...]. This week was a celebration of Fall, as the weather is getting colder and the leaves are slowly starting to change colors. After a short message from Torrey, there were a couple activities, including donut-eating contests, bobbing for apples, leg wrestling, and pumpkin carving.

Army Ten-Miler

Posted on 09:37 by rendy orton
Once I sign up for a race, it is against my nature not to compete in said race. And even when I'm not feeling so great (like right now with my unhappy IT band), if I am capable of finishing a race without doing additional damage to myself and thereby hindering future athletic efforts, I'm gonna race.I met up with the Deloitte & Touche running team before the Army Ten-Miler, and we socialized, got team jerseys, and took some pictures before heading to our various start corrals. My goal was to maintain a steady, slow pace, such that I could finish without my IT band going crazy and making me want to amputate just below the hip. Thankfully, I was right on my 9-minute mile pace for the first 6 miles, so I decided to ease the throttle down a little bit over the last couple miles. Total time = 1:26:26. Avg pace = 8:40 min/mile. Overall rank = 5,962 out of 21,289.
