Peep-o-Rama

Posted on 22:06 by rendy orton
Easter means many things. Of course, there's the real reason for the season, which we can't be reminded of enough. To paraphrase Ron Burgundy from Anchorman--and I recognize this may be a bit sacrilegious-- the Savior was and is "kind of a big deal."Then there's a bunny that hides plastic and/or real eggs all over the place, which I still don't and probably never will understand. I mean, at least Santa puts the presents under the tree so you can easily find them. I remember finding plastic eggs around the house in June or July as a kid and thinking, "I sure hope this is from the most recent Easter and not a couple years ago" (before popping the candy into my mouth, without further inquiry, of course). And then there are the delicious chocolates and candies and such that come in Easter baskets. I myself am partial to Cadbury Caramel Eggs [hold on a second, I need to wipe the drool off my keyboard]. Jelly Bellys are popular, as are Reese's peanut butter cups and the standard chocolate bunny. But the rest of this post will focus on another famous Easter treat: Peeps. Why do people love Peeps? I've wracked my brain for years trying to answer that question, and I still don't have a satisfactory explanation. Now, my mom loves Peeps. She buys them by the case during the Easter season. Ok, maybe not that many. But she really likes Peeps. And she likes them a particular way: hard. She prefers to open the package and leave it out for a couple weeks, so that the Peeps have some major crunch. One benefit of liking Peeps hard is that you can buy them in the Spring and they'll still be delicious to you in the Fall. My mom is a genius.

Peep-o-Rama
Each year, the Washington Post holds a contest inviting the public to submit dioramas featuring Peeps. These are some of the best dioramas from the 2010 contest. My friend Emily is pretty crafty, and she decided it'd be a lot of fun to host a party for friends where we all made our own Peep-o-ramas. Here's our lovely host with a basket of Peeps. We had a great time putting together our dioramas and eating various Easter sweets, while of course watching some of the NCAA March Madness basketball games. Speaking of which, here's a diorama inspired by the annual college hoops tourney:Interesting fact: Peeps are insoluble in water (as well as acetone, diluted sulfuric acid, and sodium hydroxide). Which makes this underwater swimming pool scene that much more credible:
Emily encouraged us beforehand to think of ideas, and I think some really great ones were implemented. Here's a beauty peep-geant:Ben and Charlee utilized a coarse blanket in the living room to put together their clever and deceptively-simple outdoorsy one, which I've entitled "Rafting the Peep Canyon":Simone wasn't planning on making a Peep-o-rama, but I had a couple extra ideas. So she looked my ideas over and chose to build a model of a "Peeptide", which is of course a peptide made of Peeps:For my first Peep-o-rama ever, I'm very happy with how mine turned out. I went with an homage to the stunning visual effects of the roof scene in the Matrix. At some point in the future, I may re-do my version of "The Peeptrix" to actually be on a raised rooftop instead of inside a box:
Sports were definitely a prominent theme, and sports movies are some of my favorites. That's why I was very happy to see that Tyler created his diorama "The Peepside" based on the recent movie Hollywood production about the story of Michael Oher and how he went from being a homeless boy to an NFL football player:
Our hostess created a piece based on the classic Americana scene of friends going down to the river or a lake and spending a lazy summer afternoon jumping into the water. This is "The Peep Hole":The winning Peep-o-rama of the night, as judged by a panel of two non-participants, was this Olympic-themed celebration of American domination in the moguls, entitled "Peepuls Run":We all had a great night of creativity and socialization. Feel free to hold your own evening of Peep-o-rama building. Trust me, you'll enjoy putting this Easter treat to good use. And should you get hungry, just nibble on one or two of your little building blocks. Any that get too hard can be sent to my mom by snail mail. She'll appreciate getting the tasty surprise a week or so later.

If you want a more-thorough background on Peeps, the Wikipedia entry can be found here.

Playin' 3rd/5th Wheel Host

Posted on 21:09 by rendy orton
Living in the Washington DC area has many benefits. One of those benefits is that people like to come visit me and see the most powerful city in the world, along with its monuments, memorials, and social gathering places. Recently I was fortunate to have more visits from people that I like very much.

Pete & Jordyn
As Jordyn came out from Utah to visit Pete in Philly, they decided to make a little side trip down here to visit me and see the nation's capital. We got to see a lot of the major sights, including some that I don't often frequent:

National Archives
The Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights are on display here

National Museum of Natural History
All kinds of animals and jewels and such
Note: I've decided that the porcupine is definitely the Lady Gaga of the animal world
Jordyn and I are big fans of the dino skeletons.
How am I doing on brushing my back teeth?
Pete knows, unlike Sarge and Simmons, what a puma is.

Washington Monument
aka: The DC point-of-reference since there aren't mountains

World War II Memorial
One of the newer ones, on prime real estate between Washington and Lincoln.

Lincoln Memorial
Aren't these two just the cutest?

Not a monument or memorial
We saw the sign and just couldn't resist getting a quick picture.
Oh those wacky Smyths!
Carly & Ty
The New Yorkers came down since Carly is in rehearsals for a dance production. We didn't all get to hang out very much, but we did meet up at Busboys and Poets for dinner, and it was quite the fun evening of conversation and silliness.

I Like Public Health Conferences

Posted on 19:14 by rendy orton
Why do I like public health conferences? That's a fair question to ask. Especially since I know very little of the nitty gritty of that industry. Well, the answer is that the most recent one in DC (that I'm aware of) brought a friend of mine into town and we were able to hang out a lot while she was here.

I met up with Brea in Baltimore, and we went out to dinner with our friends Aaron and Camille. [Note: As a reminder, they just got married over Christmas, and Brea and I had a very fun date that night after the reception.] We all had fun talking and catching up and discussing everything under the sun. After work on Friday, I met up with Brea downtown to check out the Terra Cotta Warriors exhibit at the National Geographic Museum. I'm not a huge museum fan, but I do like learning about cultures and see how civilizations develop. I especially like seeing their inventions and how their innovations have affected the modern world. It's kind of an unwritten and unspoken rule that when people come from out of town, you should take them to Eastern Market on Saturday morning. While it doesn't always hold, this time we followed the rules. After going for a short run and then getting ready for the day, we met up with some friends at Eastern Market for delicious food in that great atmosphere.

Plus, we had a celebrity sighting. Senator Dodd was there with (what I think was) his grand daughter, and I thought it was cool to see him in a non-Senator role. To her, he isn't some powerful politician. He's just grandpa. On Sunday night, Stanley, Brea, Alisha and I made dinner together, and it was very tasty. I think cooking as a group is really fun because it's an activity that you get to enjoy what you've been working on. Yummy friendship-building.

Monday was the last time I got to see Brea during this trip, and we met up in Crystal City for some Mexican food with our friends Chris, Elizabeth, and Liz. Chris and Elizabeth also recently got married, so it was fun to catch up with them and hear about their plans for the near future. So I don't have very many pictures to commemorate his visit, but Stanley was also here for a couple days during the weekend, and we had some good times while he was here. But that's nothing new. We're brothers from separate mothers, so we just click and it's like we still live across the street from each other. Even though the last time we lived across the street from each other was before elementary school.

The 1/4 Tank Rule

Posted on 07:40 by rendy orton
My dad taught me that I should fill up my car with gasoline whenever it got to 1/4 tank. I imagine a lot of parents try to teach their kids this rule, as it's a pretty smart one. With 1/4 tank, you can travel pretty far, so if there is a sudden need to go somewhere, you've got enough gas to get you there without having to stop for gas.Well, most of the time you can get away with waiting a little bit after 1/4 tank. You can get around town, maybe even go to work a couple times, and still make it to the gas station on your way home and fill up the tank. But every so often, your procrastination will come back to bite you.

I just got bitten for the first time. I was running behind in making it to a dinner with friends, and I knew I was a little low on gas. But I figured I could make it to dinner and then fill up afterwards, because there was a gas station right by my friend's house. Susan (my car) gave a valiant effort and made it about 28 miles, but started to sputter about 2 miles from my destination. She went in and out of "car consciousness" and coasted pretty well, but finally conked out halfway down the freeway offramp.Making sure it was safe and there weren't any cars coming, I opened my door and started run-pushing to keep momentum going, while still keeping one hand on the steering wheel. I got all the way down the offramp (of course staying on the shoulder to avoid causing traffic problems and the potential for a crash) and was able to get a little bit farther until the uphill was too steep.

Leaving the car's emergency flashers on, I walked 2-3 mins up to a gas station and exchanged my drivers license for a small gas can, which I filled with a gallon of regular unleaded and took that back to put in my car. The gallon was enough to get the car started and drive up to the gas station. Upon returning the gas can, I got my license back and then filled my tank up all the way.

Though I'd let them know what happened so they weren't wondering if I was lost, my friends gave me a hard time about being late -- definitely deserved to be joked with -- and I was pretty embarrassed to have run out of gas for the first time in my life. This is a good reminder to all of you. Learn from my mistake. Be wise. Follow the 1/4 tank rule!

Off the Hook

Posted on 07:19 by rendy orton
The CBS comedy 'How I Met Your Mother' (hereafter referred to as 'HIMYM') is very entertaining. The writing is witty, the characters are hilarious, and the storylines are clever. More than that, sometimes the show can open your eyes to profound truths and clarify things you always knew but hadn't been able to put into words.Special note: I would like to publicly thank Stanley for introducing me to 'HIMYM', without whom I probably never would have started watching the show.

Well, in one of the latest episodes, entitled "Hooked", they addressed an issue that I think single people everywhere should take a long, hard look at their lives about, and then face head-on. Myself included. The episode talked about how everyone has a person that they'd like to be with, but often that other person doesn't want to be with them really. Person #2 just lets person #1 hang around because it's nice to be wanted and to have a fall-back relationship, someone who puts you on a pedestal.

And at the same time, person #1 is probably doing the same thing to someone else. So while person #1 wants to be with person #2, and it likely will never actually happen on any equal caring-for-each-other level, a third person is wanting to be with person #1 and that will also probably never pan out to be a fully satisfying relationship for both of them. 'HIMYM' made a joke out of how person #1 often uses the phrase "right now" in keeping their person on the hook, which you have to admit is very true.

If you are honest with yourself, I bet you can think of a couple people in your own life that you've either been hooked on or allowed to be hooked onto you. Over the years, I've definitely done it, and to some degree I realized I've still got this happening. Well, RIGHT NOW I'm making the decision to end this cyclical hook behavior. I'm letting girls off the hook, and I'm not going to allow myself to be on the hook anymore. The only relationships that are worthwhile are ones where both people are equally pulling together, so that's what I'm going for.

Nawlins - 'Nuff Said

Posted on 20:34 by rendy orton
My group of high school guy friends is shrinking from the ranks of singledom at an ever-increasing rate. The latest to pass into the realm of husbandry: James. And since it's James, he decided to go big and do his bachelor party in New Orleans (and his fiancée was kind enough to let him haha). Plus, his cousin is getting married, so this trip became a double bachelor party.

On our first day, we were walking down Bourbon Street and saw this t-shirt, which we thought fitting for James and his cousin. Of course, we're just joking, but it's a funny one.Though it'd already been a pretty full day, we went to see the New Orleans Hornets play against the Orlando Magic game. For the first 3 quarters, the Magic were just blowing the Hornets away, generally maintaining a double-digit lead and even getting up by around 20 at some points. But there's a reason the game is 4 quarters. Okay, so partially it's because that's the definition of quarters, but ignore that for a second. I'm speaking in sports lingo. They play 4 quarters because you have to be ahead when the final whistle blows. On this night, the Hornets came roaring back behind a monstrous effort by David West, and we were all thrilled to watch them end up the victors!
On Saturday, we slept in a bit --it'd been a late night -- and then met up to go get breakfast/lunch. The line at Cafe Du Monde was ridiculous, so we kept going and decided to eat at The Market Cafe, which specializes in cajun creole cuisine and especially muffaletta sandwiches. With our bellies satisfied, we were ready to wander around and see the sights for a bit, including getting a picture with the whole crew on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River. The guys were all getting thirsty from so much walking, so we stopped in at Pat O'Briens for a bit. One of our guys, Stanley, struck up a conversation with some ladies and we all chatted with them for a while. It's funny that when you're on vacation you can meet random strangers and within a short amount of time you all feel like you've been friends for ages.Everybody wanted to head back to the hotel for a bit and nap, then we got ready and headed out for a loooooong night on the town. We started with a quick bite of food, and then found a bar that had a balcony for tossing beads down to the passersby. I'm pretty glad that people weren't flashing in order to get the beads, because that just seems silly to me. Mostly I just wanted to be able to say that I'd tossed down beads to people, and now I can.
There's the saying, "where there's smoke, there's fire." For me, especially when I'm out with friends or in a place like New Orleans on Bourbon Street, I have the saying, "where there's drinking, there's dancing." So we all hit up some bars and made more friends and danced a fair amount, too. Here's me at Razzoo with some new pals that were in town from San Diego, CA. They were getting swarmed by inebriated college dudes all night, so they were happy to meet an in-control professional to dance with and help keep away the sketchy guys. [Note: this is often my role when I go out with friends and there's dancing.]Sunday came all too quickly for this bachelor party trip. We got ready, packed up, left our bags with the bellhop, and went down to Cafe Du Monde for some beignets. If you haven't had a beignet, you need to get down there and try one. They are deliciously sugary. In fact, you're probably covered for your recommended daily value of sugars with just one beignet, but you've gotta try one.

As they're not very filling, we proceeded to Acme Oyster House for some authentic cajun food (including boo fries, crawfish etoufee, red beans and rice, jambalaya, raw oysters, and fried oysters) before having to grab our bags and take a cab to the airport.
