Off the Hook

Posted on 07:19 by rendy orton
The CBS comedy 'How I Met Your Mother' (hereafter referred to as 'HIMYM') is very entertaining. The writing is witty, the characters are hilarious, and the storylines are clever. More than that, sometimes the show can open your eyes to profound truths and clarify things you always knew but hadn't been able to put into words.Special note: I would like to publicly thank Stanley for introducing me to 'HIMYM', without whom I probably never would have started watching the show.

Well, in one of the latest episodes, entitled "Hooked", they addressed an issue that I think single people everywhere should take a long, hard look at their lives about, and then face head-on. Myself included. The episode talked about how everyone has a person that they'd like to be with, but often that other person doesn't want to be with them really. Person #2 just lets person #1 hang around because it's nice to be wanted and to have a fall-back relationship, someone who puts you on a pedestal.

And at the same time, person #1 is probably doing the same thing to someone else. So while person #1 wants to be with person #2, and it likely will never actually happen on any equal caring-for-each-other level, a third person is wanting to be with person #1 and that will also probably never pan out to be a fully satisfying relationship for both of them. 'HIMYM' made a joke out of how person #1 often uses the phrase "right now" in keeping their person on the hook, which you have to admit is very true.

If you are honest with yourself, I bet you can think of a couple people in your own life that you've either been hooked on or allowed to be hooked onto you. Over the years, I've definitely done it, and to some degree I realized I've still got this happening. Well, RIGHT NOW I'm making the decision to end this cyclical hook behavior. I'm letting girls off the hook, and I'm not going to allow myself to be on the hook anymore. The only relationships that are worthwhile are ones where both people are equally pulling together, so that's what I'm going for.
